Cherry Wine is Back In Stock at Good Harbor VineyardsCherry Wine: The Cherry on Top for Any Meal

Wine is the perfect way to complete any meal, but when you're really looking for the cherry on top of the evening, choose a bottle of sweet cherry wine. This beverage may not be as widespread as Pinot Noir or other traditional wines, but a drink of cherry wine is delicious all the same. At Good Harbor Vineyards, we're proud to have created a Michigan cherry wine for our guests and club members to enjoy. Our vineyard is located just outside Traverse City and offers plenty of tasting options. Discover what makes cherry wine stand out.

What Is Cherry Wine?

Cherry wine is a wine created from fermenting cherries, much like the way traditional wines are made from fermented grapes. The end product is as delicious and varied as any other type of fruit wine. Some varieties are on the dry side, whereas others are classified as sweet and bold-flavored.

Where Cherry Wine Comes From

Cherry wines aren't as commonplace across the country as more popular wines like Pinot Grigio and Riesling. However, Michiganders have a unique opportunity to enjoy cherry wine, as it's often considered the birthplace of this beverage. Michigan is among the top producers of tart cherries, and many vineyards grow cherries alongside their trademark grapes. Cherries thrive in coastal areas, making the banks of Lake Michigan the perfect place to cultivate these fruits. Other top cherry-producing states include:

  • Wisconsin
  • Indiana
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Oregon
  • Washington

What Does Michigan Cherry Wine Taste Like?

Just like any other wine, cherry wines come in lots of varieties with slightly different tasting notes. However, the bright, refreshing taste is a relative constant among bottles of black cherry wines. At Good Harbor Vineyards, we describe our flagship cherry wine as a balance of sweetness up front and a smooth, tart finish. Our cherry wine also features notes of baking spices with no artificial cherry flavor to be found.

Pair Cherry Wines With These Foods

The best thing to pair cherry wine with is a romantic atmosphere. Once you have the atmosphere down, then it's time to start considering which foods to serve with your tart glass of wine. Cherry wine pairs well with lots of different desserts and hearty meats, including:

  • All varieties of chocolate
  • Tiramisu
  • Any dessert that doesn't already contain lots of fruit
  • Blue cheese
  • Cheddar
  • Chicken (especially in Asian cuisines)
  • Roast duck
  • Glazed ribs
  • Steak

Known for the Best Cherry Wine

The team at Good Harbor Vineyards is proud to be recognized for our outstanding cherry wine. It's not simply a wine with a bit of cherry flavor—this beverage is like drinking a rich cherry pie in a bottle. Our fruit is grown in the oldest remaining block of our Balaton cherries, giving the final product a distinct, natural Northern Michigan cherry flavor. We allow our cherries to ripen about three weeks longer than the rest of our crop, which brings that refreshing, tart flavor our customers love. At your next tasting, be sure to try a glass of our cherry wine!
