Explore the dynamic world of wine through the eyes of three remarkable women. Learn more about how their unique perspectives are transforming the industry. We spoke to Taylor Simpson, co-owner of Good Harbor Vineyards, Sophie Brown, Tasting Room Manager, and Kari Jensen, Wine Club and Ecommerce Manager about their experiences in the world of wine. Dive into the vibrant and ever-evolving world of wine, viewed through the inspiring lens of three exceptional women who are leaving a mark on the industry.
Can you share a standout moment that made you think, "This is exactly why I love the wine industry?
Sophie: I would say there isn’t one standout moment, but a collection of moments that actually reinforce why I love working in the wine industry. Anytime I get to see someone try an exceptional wine or a great food and wine pairing, it really reminds me of why I do what I do. My love language is helping people find things that taste and make them feel good.
Taylor: Helping people learn better understand the farming techniques and processes involved in making wine is always exciting. I also genuinely love to travel to wine regions and explore what makes those regions unique and how wine plays a part of that story.
Kari: Barefoot running across the street with a case of Grenache Blanc in hand. That’s a story for another time.
What’s your favorite part of working with wine?
Taylor: Every year offers a new vintage to celebrate and explore. The education never ends. The people that you connect with and the relationships that develop through wine are endless.
Sophie: Working in wine means you’ve got endless stories about how a glass of Michigan wine can turn an ordinary experience into a more pleasant exciting time. Never ending ability to try something new!
What unique perspectives do you believe women bring to the traditionally male-dominated wine field?
Sophie: I think women have the ability to connect with a broader audience of consumers. Having women in the wine (and any!) industry increases inclusion, and brings in a fresh perspective.
Taylor: Many women are naturally story-tellers. I believe the narratives they create and share, is in part what can make wine so romantic. Many women also approach hospitality, marketing, winemaking, and farming from a different lens.
What’s something about Michigan wine that you think everyone should know, but probably doesn’t?
Taylor: 60% of the vinifera grapes grown for wine are grown on the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsula. That is an incredible percentage for such a relatively small region of the state. The area we live and farm is truly unique.
How do you keep your passion for wine alive, even on challenging days?
Kari: I think there is always something exciting going on in the world of wine. It could be as easy as trying a new varietal or food and wine pairing.
How do you see Michigan’s wine scene evolving in the next few years?
Sophie: Michigan's wine industry is showing remarkable growth, showcasing high quality, award winning wines. It's exciting to be part of the flourishing wine industry, I truly believe there's no better time than now to become part of this thriving scene.
Kari: I think Michigan’s wine scene is growing at a fast pace and it’s a fun time to be a part of the industry. I hope more people continue to discover the region, fall in love with wine and share it with family and friends.
What’s a piece of advice you’d give to young women aspiring to enter the wine business?
Kari: Try your hand at a variety of things to gain an overall understanding and discover what area of the industry excites you the most.
Taylor: Pursue your dream. Find the first area of the business that interests you and start there. You may decide that you are interested in other areas as you continue to work. Many people get into wine one way or another and head down paths they didn't even know existed prior to entering. It is a large industry that offers many different jobs. Jump in. You never know where the journey may lead you.
